U.S. and shouting, Get out of China," 10,000 Chinese students yesterday marched on the British Consulate in Shanghai, but were held by armoured cars and police.

All British women and children were taken out to safety by a back entrance. The men stayed.

A number of the demonstrators were allowed into the compound to deliver a petition believed to be an ultimatum that Britain should hand back Hongkong and its main- land town of Kowloon to China.

The Shanghai march came 24 3 hours after a rioting crowd burned down the British consulate in Canton during a protest against eviction of squatters from huts in Kowloon.-Reuter.
